Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon: Cinematography

Fight Scene from Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

This scene is very intense, very action packed and very fast paced. The camera follows the fight around having wide shots as well as close shots, long shots from above having a crane view of the fight. This camera work helps to show the fight not just as artistic but aggressive, its very rare you get to see two women fight on screen with such grace and ferocity.
The colour of the scene is very cold but that is not to say that the colour is dull, in fact everything is quite sharp its just the muted colour pallet conveys the seriousness of the fight.

The camera placement of this whole scene changes to firstly keep up with the whole fight but also to get the different angles, seeing the scene from afar such as the picture above makes it look like the fight takes place on a sort of stage for the two combatants to fight upon. This is good because is shows how big the space is that they will be fighting in but also it gives this feeling of grandeur. When the camera moves up close as shown below it makes the shot more personal while at the same time giving both characters equal treatment with the camera doesn't bias the shot to favour either person.

As I've already touched upon the camera follows the fight capturing it all which is very difficult in such fast paced action getting all the action in the camera, wether that means quickly switching to a wide shot as a weapon is thrown across the dojo. Then going to medium shots when the weapons are striking closer to home and having longer shots when there are kicks or acrobatics going on.
